Matthew 24:3-14

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Have you ever noticed that Jesus is portrayed as the “Blind Savior” by many religions? That He will just take everyone home in a moment of glory and make all things better. It’s too bad that is not what He says. The end of times is going to be a test of faith, not a free for all. A purifying of the true followers. As we read these verses from Matthew it makes me ponder on how many of these signs we are seeing. We already have a multitude of religions teaching people “They are the way”. Come to this church and we will make you “Feel Good”, no guilt and no expectations. Then we have the churches that say “You have to do it our way or you won’t be saved” people refusing Jesus’ communion at the orders of men with white robes and fancy certificates of human education. When you look at it we have starving people, earthquakes and tornadoes. We have wars and rumors of wars, we have nations fighting nations, and hate is at an all time high. We have leaders making decisions with no sustainable future and wickedness is running rampant thru many cities. But I guess the one that hits me the most is the number of people turning away from the faith. It is the least publicized by a secular news system but it is the most important of all the signs. When people lose God the rest is just the result. This time Jesus says we are starting over His way, He is the last chance. His own words are verse “13: but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” May we hear verse 13 and not get too focused on the rest.
